Economy: Baselworld opened its doors today!

The world's largest watch fair opened its doors this Thursday in Basel, despite an international situation somewhat disrupted by the earthquake in Japan and the conflict in certain Arab countries. Federal Councilor Didier Burkhalter, who hails from a watchmaking canton, cut the ribbon, officially opening the show, which will run until March 31.

Despite the situation in their country, Japanese exhibitors were present. "They want to continue doing business and return to normal life," emphasized Sylvie Ritter, director of Baselworld. However, the events affecting the archipelago are likely to have certain consequences, as the Japanese are major consumers of luxury goods. This situation is expected to be temporary, adds Ms. Ritter.

Start of the year with optimism

For Swiss manufacturers, after a year of growth in 2010, the first two months of 2011 were "enjoying," said François Thiébaud, president of the Swiss exhibitors.
