The ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals, for men) and WTA (Women's Tennis Association, for women) world rankings are based on a points system. This system reflects players' performances over a rolling 52-week period, or a full year.

General principle
- Players accumulate points based on their results in official tournaments.
- Only their best results are retained (see below).
- The ranking is updated weekly, usually on Mondays.
Which tournaments are taken into account?
ATP (men) – 19 best results recorded:
- The 4 Grand Slam tournaments
- 8 compulsory Masters 1000
- Best results in:
- ATP 500
- ATP 250
- Masters 1000 not compulsory
- Tournaments like the Davis Cup, the Olympic Games or the Laver Cup
- ATP Finals (Masters Tournament)
WTA (women) – 16 best results taken into account:
- The 4 Grand Slam tournaments
- 4 WTA 1000 compulsory
- Best results in:
- WTA 1000 not compulsory
- WTA 500
- WTA 250
- Competitions like the Billie Jean King Cup or the Olympic Games
- WTA Finals
