📱 iPhone Calculator: How to activate scientific mode, change the exchange rate and use all its functions
At first glance, the iPhone calculator appears to be a simple tool for quickly adding or multiplying. However, it hides many advanced features: scientific mode, currency and unit conversion, and even handy shortcuts via Spotlight or Siri. Here's a complete guide to getting the most out of it.
🔹 1. Where to find the calculator on iPhone?
- From Control Center: Swipe down from the top right corner (or bottom on older models) and tap the calculator icon.
- From the Home screen: Use Spotlight search by typing calculator.
- With Siri: Just say “Hey Siri, what is 245 times 13?”
🔹 2. Activate hidden science mode
The iPhone calculator switches to scientific mode automatically:
- Open the calculator.
- Rotate your iPhone to landscape mode.
- You then have access to: sine, cosine, tangent, square roots, exponentials, logarithms, etc.
👉 Ideal for students, engineers or anyone who needs advanced features.
🔹 3. Currency conversion and exchange rates
Contrary to popular belief, the native Calculator app doesn't directly allow you to change the exchange rate. However, there are several solutions:
✅ Method 1: Spotlight
- Swipe down to open Spotlight search.
- For example, type “100 EUR in CHF” or “50 USD in EUR”.
- Immediate result, based on current exchange rates.
✅ Method 2: Siri
- Say: “Hey Siri, convert $200 to Swiss francs.”
- Siri uses Apple's updated rates.
✅ Method 3: Third-party applications
If you need an integrated calculator with personalized rates (for example for a trip, a budget or professional monitoring):
- Download an app like XE Currency, Currency Converter Plus, or CalConvert.
- They allow you to save your favorite currencies and update rates in real time.
🔹 4. Unit conversion (weight, distance, temperature, etc.)
The iPhone also allows you to convert:
- Temperatures: Type “30°C in Fahrenheit”.
- Distances: “10 km to miles”.
- Weight: “5 kg in pounds”.
These conversions also go through Spotlight or Siri, directly without an external application.
🔹 5. Hidden Tricks of the iPhone Calculator
- Delete a number without starting over: Swipe the screen from right to left or left to right on the displayed number.
- Return to last result: Open the app again, it will be automatically displayed.
- Quick calculations with Control Center: no need to leave your current app, the calculator remains accessible everywhere.
🔹 6. In summary
- Scientific mode is activated by rotating the iPhone to landscape.
- Exchange rates and currency conversions are done via Spotlight, Siri, or third-party apps.
- The iPhone calculator remains a powerful tool, far beyond simple addition.
