US Presidential Election: Santorum Rejoices, Romney Worries a Little
Among Americans, the battle continues between Republicans while awaiting the next elections on February 28 in Arizona and Michigan.
This week, ultraconservative candidate Rick Santorum is celebrating his victories in Colorado, Missouri, and Minnesota earlier this month. In the polls, he is clearly "threatening" the momentum of Mitt Romney, who remains the long-term favorite. Indeed, he garnered over 301% of the vote in Michigan. A month earlier, polls gave Santorum only 141%.
During a debate organized by CNN on Wednesday, Rick Santorum revived his favorite topics: opposition to abortion, prenatal testing, same-sex marriage, and the demand to remove creationism as a subject of study in the education system. For the moment, his extreme positions are causing concern within the Republican establishment that such a candidate could counter the centrist vote against Barack Obama.
Romney, for his part, is proving unconvincing, even in his home state of Michigan. As for Newt Gingrich, he is leading in the polls in Georgia, and the fourth candidate, Ron Paul, is preparing his arguments.
Last night, Barack Obama presented the core of his corporate tax reform, following up on his 2010 promise. This measure should allow a 71% reduction in the corporate tax rate, while "increasing revenue through the elimination of dozens of tax loopholes," he specified.
