In Marseille, Sarkozy becomes the defender of the French soul

On Sunday, Nicolas Sarkozy, the UMP candidate, delivered a speech to the 10,000 activists gathered in Marseille for the start of the campaign. The President played the unifying card by expressing himself thus: " Je ne veux pas aller à la rencontre des Français pour parler à la droite, à la gauche ou au centre. La France, c’est tous les Français. (…) »

After once again discussing his proposal to increase the use of referendums, Mr. Sarkozy called for the introduction of a dose of proportional representation in legislative elections. According to him, this reform would allow all major political movements to have deputies to represent them in the National Assembly. It should be recalled that this project had already been discussed by François Bayrou and Marine Le Pen.

In front of this large gathering, Nicolas Sarkozy posed as " defender of the soul of France ", of its culture and its identity. " Love France, he stressed, it is refusing to sacrifice one's future ". In his remarks, one could sense that he was opposing (without naming him) the points of view of François Hollande, suggesting that this candidate did not really love his country since he defends, he added, measures intended to weaken it (he specified here the 35-hour week, the closure of nuclear power plants, the vote of foreigners in local elections, euthanasia). The assembled public reacted with noisy enthusiasm to Mr. Sarkozy's virulent attacks on François Hollande. The President even accused the socialist candidate " to lie to the French ".
