US Presidential Elections: Latest Developments

While Barack Obama, the current President of the United States, remains at the top of the polls, candidate Romney is already looking ahead to the final duel with him. For now, he is well ahead of his opponent, Newt Gingrich, in the polls.

Last Saturday, Mitt Romney won the Nevada Republican caucuses, marking his third victory in the five races held since the primaries began. He has so far secured only 81 delegates out of the 1,144 needed to secure the nomination. As for the other candidates' delegate count, Gingrich now has 27, Rick Santorum 15, and Ron Paul 6.

Surprise victory

On Tuesday, ultraconservative candidate Rick Santorum won the Republican elections in Minnesota, Colorado, and Missouri. Thanks to this spectacular three-peat, he relaunched his campaign and overtook Newt Gingrich in terms of the number of delegates won (45 to 32).

Mitt Romney, for his part, did not repeat his 2008 success in Minnesota and Colorado this time around. However, he still leads the race for delegates with 107 so far, but the mountain remains to be climbed with the 1,144 needed to secure the nomination.

Negative advertisements

In the midst of the primaries, vitriolic advertisements are flooding American screens. Indeed, Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich have engaged in a veritable war of words, using television spots. It should be noted here that these negative advertisements are financed by political action committees, whose financial resources are virtually unlimited. Millions of dollars have been sunk so far into this media campaign, which is said to be one of the most aggressive in American political history.
