News: Where are we with Japan, Libya and Ivory Coast?
Over the past few months, newspaper headlines and major media outlets have been dominated by geopolitical crises and natural disasters around the world. What is the outcome of all this today?
Japan: Return to 'normal' life despite Fukushima concerns
The 20-kilometer exclusion zone established around the Fukushima nuclear power plant is officially off-limits. Tokyo Electric Power, the company that manages the site, estimates it will take between six and nine months for the most damaged reactors at the plant to be stabilized. The Japanese Nuclear Safety Agency has indicated that it is currently unable to set a deadline for the evacuation of the population.
As a new aftershock hits the east of the capital, Japan has planned an exceptional 4.4 trillion yen (330 billion euros) relief package for the restoration of public infrastructure, the installation of temporary housing, the treatment of debris, and the restoration of schools.
Libya: Stagnation despite NATO action
In Libya, the conflict continues, despite NATO taking control. Despite the establishment of a no-fly zone, the insurgents have failed to gain an advantage over Gaddafi's forces. Meanwhile, Great Britain, France, and Italy have announced the dispatch of liaison officers to assist the insurgents with logistics. The European Union has also sent troops to ensure the delivery of essential aid to the population.
Ivory Coast: a situation that remains complicated
While Alassane Ouattara's official inauguration will take place in the second half of May, the current situation in Côte d'Ivoire remains unresolved. Despite the President's promise of a rapid economic recovery and the holding of legislative elections before the end of the year, he faces numerous internal challenges. The fighting has subsided, but a conflict has erupted this time between pro-Ouattara forces: a spat between the militia and the president's regular army, following a looting incident in San Pedro, forced UN forces to intervene.
