News: Political uprising now in Bahrain

The wave of conflicts shaking the Middle East has just swept over Bahrain. A crowd of several thousand protesters gathered for the first time on Sunday in front of the government headquarters in Manama. Angry for three weeks, they are demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, the source of their discontent. A group of police officers equipped with helmets and shields has firmly established themselves in front of the building where the government usually meets every Sunday.

For 200 years

En plus du départ du roi, les manifestations réclament que le gouvernement reconnaisse les droits du peuple d’élire un Parlement à pleins pouvoirs législatifs et d’avoir un gouvernement élu, en dépit d’un récent remaniement ministériel et de récentes concessions. L’opposition dominée par des formations chiites souhaite l’abolition d’une Constitution mise en place en 2002.

Dans un communiqué, le prince Salman ben Hamad Al-Khalifa a déclaré avoir pris bonne note de ces exigences, mais précisé qu’il attendait celles d’autres groupes politiques, en référence aux organisations proches du gouvernement. Il s’est en outre dit prêt à engager le dialogue.
