From Libya, Gaddafi issues threats to the West

The man who still terrorizes Libya today declared that he promised thousands of deaths in the event of intervention by America or NATO. "It will be another Vietnam," he added. In response to these remarks, the rebel spokesman, Abdelhafez Ghoqa, called for UN airstrikes against the mercenaries employed by the regime.

After 16 days of insurrection, the international community, keen to help the opposition but aware of the harmful consequences of too much involvement, is advancing its pawns, particularly military ones, after having adopted a series of humanitarian aid measures.

International humanitarian aid

The crackdown has so far left 6,000 dead, including 3,000 in Tripoli and 2,000 in Benghazi. The international community is reacting.

The World Food Programme (WFP), a UN agency, announced a €28 million emergency food aid package for 2.7 million people in Libya, Egypt, and Tunisia. Meanwhile, France and the United Kingdom sent several planes and a ship to evacuate thousands of people to Egypt.

Two American warships arrived in the Mediterranean on Wednesday to position themselves off the coast of Libya. The aim is to provide support for either humanitarian or military operations. The HMS Westminster, a British frigate, left Gibraltar for Libya carrying helicopters and missile launchers, as well as medical supplies and blankets.
