News: UN issues tough sanctions against Gaddafi
After 13 days of an unprecedented uprising in Libya, which has plunged citizens into a climate of terror, the UN Security Council has just issued a series of stringent sanctions against Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, his regime and family, as well as 16 individuals closely associated with his clan. These individuals are subject to travel restrictions, and their financial assets have already been frozen. The UN has also imposed an arms embargo on Libya.
A first
For the first time, the Security Council unanimously decided to refer a member state to the International Criminal Court (ICC) for crimes against humanity, following the targeted attacks perpetrated against the Libyan population. However, the principle behind this move was not unanimously supported by the member states. Indeed, China, Russia, South Africa, India, Brazil, and Portugal raised objections.
It's very difficult to leave Tripoli
Everyone is limiting their movements. Leaving Tripoli by road is virtually impossible due to the presence of tanks. Police repression is also present in Misrata, east of the capital.
On the west coast, in Zuwara near the Tunisian border, pro-Gaddafi forces are reportedly encircling the city. Zahouiya, another city near Tripoli, is also experiencing fierce fighting, while further east, the main cities are now in the hands of the opposition. As for foreigners, they continue to flee the country by any means possible.
