Jean-Louis Étienne has arrived in Siberia
It took Jean-Louis Étienne just five days to reach Eastern Siberia with his balloon. He landed yesterday morning at 7:40 a.m. (French time) 220 km from Batagaï and is in good health, explains his flight coordinator, Christophe Houver.
In this isolated region, the temperature is -13° centigrade. The flight lasted 121 hours and 30 minutes, and the explorer was happy to be able to stretch his legs despite the night beginning to fall and the presence of wolves that reign supreme in the tundra. Jean-Louis Étienne, who crossed the North Pole on Wednesday, entered history as the first person to have flown over the Arctic aboard a rozière (a balloon filled with helium and hot gas).
The scientist who wanted “take the pulse of the planet and understand climate change”, will measure the magnetic field, the amount of suspended particles and the CO2 content in the atmosphere. According to him, the Arctic is on the front line.
