Davis Cup, World Group, Play-off Match

Roger Federer has finally agreed to play for the Swiss team, despite his painful defeat in the US Open final (last Monday), everyone could have understood that his motivation might be lower for this Davis Cup play-off match.

With Federer and Wawrinka, the Swiss team is almost guaranteed to save its place in the world elite against the Italians who have no players capable (on paper) of competing with the Swiss.

Bolelli/Starace – Chiudinelli/Wawrinka 6-2 6-4 7-6

Starace – Federer 3-6 0-6 4-6
Fognini – Lammer 7-5 7-6
Switzerland retains its place in the World Group. The draw will take place on Wednesday, September 23, in Geneva.

Italian selection: Andreas Seppi (ATP 49), Simone Bollelli (ATP 68), Fabio Fognini (ATP 73) and Potito Starace (ATP 92).
Swiss selection: Roger Federer (ATP 1), Stanislas Wawrinka (ATP 22), Marco Chiudinelli (ATP 117) and Michael Lammer (ATP 161). Stéphane Bohli (ATP 146) has been ruled out.
