20 years later: Dam 🇹🇷 Türkiye – Switzerland 🇨🇭

The infamous playoff match between the Swiss national team and Turkey ended in a street battle.

The most affected was the Valaisan defender of the Swiss team Stéphane Grichting who was attacked with a knife in the lower abdomen in the corridor leading to the locker room after the match.

Sanctions against Turkey 

  • Matches played behind closed doors and on neutral ground: The next three Euro 2008 qualifying matches took place under these conditions.
  • Fine : The Turkish federation was ordered to pay 200,000 CHF.
  • Individual sanctions: Three Turkish players have been suspended for several matches.
  • Assistant Coach: He was suspended for six months. 

Sanctions against Switzerland 

  • Player suspension: Benjamin Huggel has been suspended for four matches, causing him to miss the World Cup in Germany.
