Rafel Navarro succeeds Pia Sundhage as head of the Swiss women's team
The Swiss Football Association (ASF) announces the end of its collaboration with Pia Sundhage, the former coach of the Swiss women's team, and formalizes the appointment of Rafael Navarro as the new national team coach. The assistant coach, until his new commitment with the Swiss women's national team, will at least know one player from the young Sydney Schertenleib who plays for Barça!
No one understands the ASF's decision not to extend the contract of successful coach Pis Sundhage after the impressive Euro 2025 campaign and the two recent friendly victories (Switzerland-Canada ).
Aged 39, Navarro is leaving his position as assistant coach at FC Barcelona Women, one of the most successful clubs in Europe, where he spent six years. During this period, the Catalan club dominated European football, winning three of the last five league titles. Champions League and accumulating six championship titles as well as five cups.
The Catalan will take charge of the Swiss women's national team with the aim of strengthening the sporting structure, from youth development to the senior team. In collaboration with Johan Djourou, the new technical director of the national teams, Navarro intends to develop a playing philosophy based on... technical, there creativity and the’collective intelligence.
«I want an attacking team that progresses with the ball and builds play from the back with short passes,» Navarro explained. While clarifying that he isn’t looking to replicate Barça’s style, he nevertheless wants to instill ideas inspired by his Catalan experience into the team. «I want to bring ideas from Barça here,» he added, full of enthusiasm for his new mission.
