Belinda Bencic on the road to another title

Belinda Bencic will play in the final of the WTA 500 tournament in Tokyo on Sunday, after defeating American Sofia Kenin (world number 25) in an intense and hard-fought match (7-6, 3-6, 6-2). The St. Gallen native, ranked 13th in the world, is confirming her excellent return to form on hard courts.

Tokyo seems well-suited to Swiss elite sport 🇨🇭, following the triumph of Ditaji Kambunji this summer at the World Athletics Championships, victory in the 100m hurdles, Bulinda Bencic could also triumph in the Japanese capital.

A solid and controlled course in Tokyo

Throughout the week, the Swiss player impressed with her consistency and mental strength. In the semifinals, she won a very close first set, before losing the second. But in the deciding set, Bencic rediscovered her precision and aggression, winning 62 % points and sealing her victory after 2 hours and 15 minutes of combat.

With a strong serve (30 points won out of 39 in the first set) and a great return, the 2021 Olympic champion made her way to a 10th major final in her career.

Objective: a second title this season

On Sunday, Bencic will face Linda Noskova (20 years old, world number 17) in the final. A victory would allow the Swiss to win a second trophy in 2025, eight months after her success in Abu Dhabi, and to climb to the threshold of the world's top 10 (11th).

Already assured of progressing to WTA ranking, the mother of little Bella confirms that she can combine family life and sporting ambition.

A new dynamic for Swiss women's tennis

If she wins in Tokyo, Belinda Bencic would make one of the most impressive comebacks of the season. Her consistency, steely mentality, and experience place her among the great figures of Swiss women's tennis, alongside legends like Martina Hingis and Patty Schnyder, who have made their mark on the sport's history in Switzerland.
