2026 World Cup: Switzerland can qualify tonight
Football – 2026 World Cup Qualifiers
After his 2-0 victory in Sweden, the Swiss team is very close to the goal. A success in Slovenia, combined with a slip-up in Kosovo, would officially seal its qualification for the World Cup.
Switzerland one step away from the USA, Canada and Mexico... version 2026
Murat Yakin's national team has never been closer to securing a new world title. With a 2-0 victory over Sweden in Solna on Friday night, the Swiss took a big step toward the 2026 World Cup.
On Monday in Ljubljana, they could already validate their ticket, even before the last two matches of November.
"We're enjoying the moment and we'll look at the standings after the match," said Murat Yakin.
For his part, Granit Xhaka recognizes that the players did their calculations well:
"We know we need a victory, and that Kosovo may not win in Sweden. But our priority is to focus on ourselves."
Condition #1: Beat Slovenia
No qualification without victory.
A draw would keep Switzerland in a favourable position, notably thanks to its advantageous goal difference (+9 against -2 for Kosovo and -4 for Sweden), but would still not guarantee anything.
If Slovenia wins in Ljubljana, it will be out of the race for first place.
Condition No. 2: that Kosovo does not impose itself on Sweden
If Kosovo does not win in Solna, no opponent would have more than five points in the standings.
Switzerland would then have a seven-point lead, which would formalize its qualification for the World Cup with two days left in the qualifiers.
What if Switzerland and Kosovo win?
In this case, the fight for first place would continue between the two nations.
With a five-point lead, the Nati would nevertheless remain in a strong position, needing only two more points from their remaining matches in November - against Sweden in Geneva and then in Kosovo.
An ideal scenario within reach

Switzerland has never had the opportunity to validate its world qualification so early.
While it still needs to be put into practice on the pitch, the dynamic is there: defensive rigor, offensive efficiency and a team united around its key players.
A victory in Slovenia could therefore transform a simple autumn Monday into a historic evening for Swiss football.
