Ticino says yes to lower health insurance premiums
Ticino citizens want to ease their healthcare budget. On Sunday, they approved two popular initiatives aimed at reducing the weight of health insurance premiums.
A double victory for policyholders
The Socialist Party's initiative was approved by 57,081 voters. It calls for premiums not to exceed 101 of a household's disposable income, thanks to an increase in the cantonal contribution to premium reductions. The Lega dei Ticinesi's initiative received even greater support, with 60,511 votes in favor. It proposes increasing the maximum tax deductions for health insurance premiums: from 5,500 to 9,000 francs for single people, from 10,900 to 18,000 francs for married couples, with an increase also planned for retirees.
Authorities opposed to the initiatives
The Ticino Grand Council and the cantonal government recommended rejecting these two proposals, citing a risk to public finances. But voters chose to prioritize reducing premiums, in a canton where healthcare bills weigh heavily on households.

Sustained participation
The turnout reached 51,641,000, a sign of strong interest in this vote. With this double yes vote, Ticino is sending a clear message: reducing health insurance premiums is a political and social priority for its residents.
