Audrey Werro in the 800m final with big ambitions
Master of her race, Werro controlled the pace without having to draw on her reserves. Leading at the start of the final straight, she was ultimately only beaten by Kenyan Lilian Odira (1'56''85), who made a decisive effort in the final meters.
As the Swiss record holder over the distance, Werro will need to deliver a strong performance to hope for a medal. But her recent races prove that she's among the world's elite. On August 28, she lowered her national record to 1:55.91 at the Weltklasse in Zurich, a mark that represents the third-best performance in the world this year.
In the current rankings, only Great Britain's Keely Hodgkinson has run faster this season, with two impressive times: 1:54.74 in Silesia and 1:55.69 in Athletissima. The Swiss will also have to keep a close eye on fellow Briton Georgia Hunter Bell and Kenyan sisters Mary and Sarah Moraa, all of whom are in contention for the podium.
