Health insurance premiums: a new increase expected in 2026 in Switzerland
Health costs are rising sharply
The main reason for this increase is the explosion in health spending, which climbed by 4.7% in the first half of 2025, or nearly one billion additional francs in one year.
- Medical practices: 4.7 billion francs
- Hospital care: second most expensive item
- Psychology: +15.6%
- Home care: +11.4%
Some regions are seeing particularly sharp increases. The cantons of central Switzerland, such as Nidwalden (+15%), Zug (+11%) and Aargau (+7%), will be among the hardest hit. In French-speaking Switzerland, the increase remains more moderate: Fribourg (+6%), Valais and Geneva (+4%), Neuchâtel (+3%), Jura and Vaud (+2%).
Health insurance companies under pressure despite high reserves
In 2024, insurers generated a profit of CHF 400 million, bringing their total reserves to CHF 7.8 billion. However, several insurance companies are struggling to absorb rising costs. Major players such as CSS, ÖKK, and Vivao Sympany have seen their reserves dwindle in recent years.
Faced with this situation, policyholders continue to seek better conditions: 17% of policyholders changed funds in 2025, a rate similar to that of 2024.
Official announcement expected
The final figures will be published shortly by the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH). Swiss households should therefore prepare for a further increase, confirming the upward trend of recent years.
