Questions and answers about bank clearing in Switzerland
What is the bank clearing number in Switzerland?
The clearing number is a digital identifier that allows a bank to be quickly identified in the Swiss Interbank Clearing System (SIC). Each institution has its own code, which is essential for correctly executing a payment.
What is the difference between an IBAN and a clearing number?
The IBAN identifies a specific bank account, while the clearing number identifies the bank in which this account is opened. The two work together to ensure the successful execution of a transfer.
Do we still need the clearing number if we have the IBAN?
For a classic transfer in Switzerland, IBAN is sufficient : the SIC system automatically extracts the corresponding clearing number. However, for certain technical or interbank transactions, clearing remains an essential element. The clearing number is also present in the IBAN.
Is the clearing number used internationally?
No. Abroad, these are theIBAN and the SWIFT/BIC code who take over. Clearing is only valid within Switzerland.
Where can I find my bank's clearing number?
You can find it on your bank's official website, in your bank documents, or via the public list published by SIX Interbank Clearing (which manages the SIC system in Switzerland). Clearing of major Swiss banks here
