US Open 2025 – match Riedi (435th ATP) vs. de Minaur (8th ATP)
Round of 16 at the 2025 US Open. The Swiss qualifier has already more than won his tournament. He has six wins, including the one from the qualifiers.
The young Swiss player unfortunately lost the match in 3 sets but that does not detract from his fantastic performance in this major tournament.
The match will take place on September 1st but the time is not yet known (3 p.m., 5 p.m.??)
Match context
Swiss Leandro Riedi is enjoying a dream run at the 2025 US Open. Ranked only 435th in the world, he achieved one of the tournament's greatest feats by eliminating Francisco Cerundolo after trailing two sets to zero. Miraculously qualifying for the round of 16, he becomes the most unexpected Swiss player to reach the second week of a Grand Slam in decades.

Facing him is a completely different challenge: Alex de Minaur, world number 8 and a sure bet on the tour. The Australian has shown impressive strength since the start of the tournament, confirming his status as the favorite.
Strengths and weaknesses
Leandro Riedi (Switzerland, ATP 435)
Highlights:
An unfailing determination, capable of coming back into a match even when it's off to a bad start. An effective serve that allows him to score free points at key moments. The element of surprise: he has nothing to lose and plays freely, without pressure.
Weaknesses:
Lack of experience against players in the world's top 10. Uncertain physical condition after several grueling matches, including a five-set marathon. Low consistency in exchanges compared to elite standards.
Alex de Minaur (Australia, ATP 8)
Highlights:
Excellent mobility and court coverage, one of the best defenders on tour. Consistent and solid from the baseline, he often forces his opponent to overplay. Experience in major events: he has already reached the second week of Grand Slams several times.
Weaknesses:
Can sometimes lack power compared to the big servers on the tour. Risk of putting yourself under pressure against an unpredictable outsider who plays without complexes.
Match prediction
On paper, the hierarchy is clear: de Minaur is the clear favorite. His experience, consistency, and physical condition make him the natural candidate to reach the quarter-finals. Bookmakers are giving very low odds for his victory (around 1.05), compared to very high odds for Riedi (around 8.00 to 10.00).
However, the Swiss has already proven he can surprise and take advantage of the pressure on his opponents. If he manages to impose his serve and maintain a high level of concentration, he could win a set. But overall, the most likely scenario remains a three- or four-set victory for de Minaur.
