History of YouTube and the Shorts format

YouTube has officially launched the format Shorts in September 2020, with a beta version deployment in India, in response to the ban on TikTok in the country. An initial launch in the United States followed in March 2021, and worldwide availability was effective from July 2021.

This new feature of vertical videos of less than 60 seconds s’inscrivait dans la stratégie de YouTube pour concurrencer TikTok et répondre à la demande croissante de contenus courts et engageants. Depuis October 2024, YouTube allows Shorts to reach a maximum duration of 3 minutes, Vertical or square videos of this duration are automatically classified as Shorts.
