Basic health insurance comparison in Switzerland: why use PRIMINFO

In Switzerland, every resident is required to take out basic health insurance (LAMal). The choice of insurer is free, and basic benefits are defined by law: they are identical regardless of the insurer. The only difference, therefore, lies in the amount of the premiums and the model chosen (family doctor, telemedicine, HMO, etc.).

To compare premiums, there are many private sites on the Internet (see a brief list below), but they are often linked to brokers or specific companies. This can create confusion and even steer your choices toward a specific insurer.

The only official and totally independent comparator is PRIMINFO, set up by the Swiss Confederation (Federal Office of Public Health – FOPH).
It is the reference tool, because:

  • he presents all approved health insurance funds, without exception;
  • it uses official data from the OFSP, updated annually;
  • it does not direct you to a specific broker or company;
  • It allows you to make a transparent choice, based solely on price and insurance model.

In summary: To avoid confusion and to be sure to compare the correct information, use exclusively PRIMINFO (in German). It is the only reliable, official comparator recognized by the Confederation.

RTS and FRC (https://www.frc.ch/dossiers/dossier-primes Available in 2024 for calculating 2025 premiums (check if it is kept up to date afterwards), it also offers a truly neutral comparator, but all the others are run by private commercial groups, which are only looking for profit.

Here is the list in 2025 of basic and supplementary health insurance premium comparators to avoid in order not to increase your premium:

Private health insurance premium comparison (to be avoided)

  • Komparator.ch
  • Bonus.ch
  • Comparis.ch
  • health-insurance-comparison.ch
  • assurance-info.ch
  • caisse-maladie.ch (supposedly neutral – but works with bonus.ch)
  • Groupe-mutuel.ch
  • Axa.ch
  • Comparea.ch
  • Spartagroup.ch
  • Moneyland.ch
  • Compare.ch
  • devis-sante.ch
  • insurando.ch
  • mes-complementaires.ch
  • health.app
  • …certainly others, but as you understand, not only are the risks of errors greater, but above all, their services will try to get you to sign up for a new insurance premium in order to collect a commission!

Tips for changing insurance

Please note that only the 300.- and 2500.- deductibles should be considered in your choice; the others are not advantageous for the insured!

It's our health insurance premiums that fund this non-exhaustive list of private websites that invest thousands of francs in advertising to make money off our backs and keep inflating our insurance premiums! It's a completely stupid system to have so many insurance companies offering the same basic mandatory service at very different prices that change every year.

Thank you for the valuable advice. I'm getting lost with all these comparison sites and brokers who call me to take stock. If I understand correctly:
- we have to make our choice by comparing with priminfo
- choosing your insurance and model
- register for the new, cheaper insurance directly from the website

Thank you for the valuable information! I admit that I thought the comparison sites were all the same! But it is true that to avoid continuing to increase premiums, you have to avoid intermediary commissions and therefore not use private comparison sites that help themselves in the process.
