GPT-5: OpenAI unveils its most powerful AI model to date
On July 26, OpenAI unveiled GPT-5, the next generation of its generative artificial intelligence model. Smarter, faster, and more reliable than its predecessors, it aims to redefine the use of AI assistants in everyday life and work.
Since the launch of ChatGPT By the end of 2022, OpenAI had become the most well-known name in generative AI, with nearly 700 million weekly active users. Its CEO, Sam Altman, has been quick to compare GPT-5 to “a PhD-level expert on any topic.”
A qualitative leap according to Sam Altman
To illustrate the evolution, he recalls that GPT-3 resembled a sometimes imprecise high school student, while GPT-4 resembled a university student. GPT-5 would take a new step in terms of comprehension, reasoning and relevance of answers.
A global competition for the most efficient AI
Facing OpenAI, tech giants are honing their own models: Gemini at Google, Meta AI for Facebook and Instagram, Claude developed by Anthropic, and Grok integrated into X by Elon Musk's startup xAI. China is not far behind with DeepSeek, which caused a stir earlier this year with its R1 model.
This frantic race aims for so-called general AI – capable of competing with human cognitive abilities – and pushes companies to multiply innovations to attract users and developers.
More powerful features
OpenAI touts GPT-5 as its “smartest, fastest, and most useful” model. Highlighted new features include:
Instant software creation: In just a few minutes, GPT-5 can generate the complete code for a working application from a simple query in everyday language. Reduced “hallucinations”: The model now admits when it doesn’t know, instead of inventing credible but false answers. Enhanced security: If there is any doubt about malicious use, GPT-5 limits its response to harmless general information. Customizable tone: The user can choose between a concise, friendly, or sarcastic style. Advanced integration: Direct connection possible with Gmail and other services.
Cautious but generally positive feedback
After two weeks of testing, developer Simon Willison points out:
"It's not a radical departure, but GPT-5 rarely makes mistakes and consistently gives a sense of mastery, even excellence."
Some observers, however, remain cautious about the path to true general AI. Sam Altman admits that GPT-5 does not yet continuously learn from new information, a key step in achieving this goal.
A battle that costs billions
The race to AI requires massive investment. Microsoft, Google, Meta, and Amazon each plan to spend tens of billions of dollars on data centers, advanced chips, and specialized teams by 2025.
OpenAI, financially backed by Microsoft, was valued at $300 billion in March. But Sam Altman cites "dizzying costs" to continue increasing the computing power needed for future models.
GPT-5 vs. its competitors
Elon Musk has already responded by claiming that xAI's Grok 4 Heavy outperforms GPT-5 two weeks before its release, and promises an "exceptional" Grok 5 by the end of the year. Competition is therefore expected to be fierce, with each player seeking to establish their assistant as the essential tool for everyday life.
In summary
GPT-5 marks a significant advance in the accuracy, speed, and security of AI-generated responses. It offers enhanced software creation capabilities, advanced customization, and improved reliability. While it doesn't yet represent a revolution in general AI, it confirms that OpenAI remains an undisputed leader in the global race for artificial intelligence.
