A final without a penalty shootout since 1984
For the first time since the inaugural Women's Euro 2019 in 1984, the final went to penalties. Despite a Spanish dominance marked by numerous clear chances, the English held firm. Goalkeeper Hannah Hampton shone, saving two Spanish penalties, while Chloe Kelly, the 2022 hero, sealed the victory with a masterful shot into the top corner of Cata Coll's net. A moment of glory in front of 34,203 spectators at Basel's St. Jakob-Park, in a tournament that saw a record attendance of 657,291.
Spain strikes first thanks to Aitana Bonmatí
Despite a strong start to the match, England were quickly cornered by the "Roja". In the 25th minute, Ballon d'Or winner Aitana Bonmatí initiated a brilliant move, which was capped off by Mariona Caldentey's header. A classy team move, it reflected the Spanish team's technical dominance. Bonmatí, true to her exceptional level, was logically named player of the tournament.
Chloe Kelly, decisive super-sub once again
Lauren James, injured in the semi-final, had to give way to Chloe Kelly before halftime. The Arsenal player energized England's play and delivered the perfect cross for Alessia Russo's equalizer (59th minute). The more combative English women leveled the match until extra time, largely dominated by Spain, but without converting. Sarina Wiegman, now a three-time European champion (with the Netherlands in 2017 and England in 2022 and 2025), once again demonstrated her strategic acumen.
England on top of Europe… again
With this latest victory, the England women's team has entered European football history. Chloe Kelly, who scored the decisive penalty, could well have her own statue in Trafalgar Square, in tribute to her role in two legendary finals. A collective triumph that symbolizes the mental strength, talent, and experience of the Lionesses.
