[IFA 2012] An Intel smartphone from ZTE

Chinese manufacturer ZTE took advantage of the IFA trade fair currently taking place in Berlin to unveil a new smartphone. What makes it special is that it runs on the Intel Z2640 processor. This is something of an oddity, given that most smartphones these days run on ARM processors (or, more recently, nVidia processors). These processors are indeed good and don't consume too much energy. However, as you might expect, Intel (master of the PC market) has no intention of letting its rival get ahead of it.

The ZTE Grand X IN (its real name) features a 4.3-inch qHD screen with 960×540 resolution, an 8-megapixel sensor on the rear (with LED flash) and a 0.3-megapixel sensor on the front (for video).

As mentioned above, the processor used is a single-core Intel 1.6 GHz processor backed up by one GB of RAM. It has 16 GB of storage capacity, which can be extended with a MicroSD card.

It will be running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and will feature all the usual chips like Wi-fi, Wi-fi direct, Bluetooth (only 2.1), NFC, GPS, Radio, etc., all in a casing no bigger than a centimetre (9.9 mm to be precise) and weighing 141 grams.

Small advantage, Intel says that the phone lasts 26 hours in real use with its 1650 mAh battery. It remains to be seen what real use means for Intel ^^

For the moment, no price has been revealed, but it shouldn't be long now, as the ZTE Grand X IN is due to arrive in Europe (and that's great for a Chinese manufacturer) during September. So it won't be long to wait for the impatient 😉
