Disco diva Donna Summer dies at 63
After Whitney Houston, another queen of music has just left us. Indeed, early this morning, the American singer Donna Summer (born LaDonna Adrian Gaines) died in Florida, at the age of 63, following lung cancer. She dominated the scene and held the number one spot in the charts in the 1970s and 80s. We remember her global hits such as "I Feel Love", "On the Radio", "Love to Love you Baby", "Last Dance", "Hot Stuff".
Her voice, sometimes strong and dynamic, sometimes lascivious and sweet, earned her five Grammy Awards (the Oscars for song), in the Dance, Rock and R&B sections.
Several of Donna Summer's songs have been adapted and covered by hundreds of artists worldwide. They have also appeared as soundtracks in several films (e.g., "The Full Monty" and "Hot Stuff"). Artists such as Beyoncé, Kylie Minogue, and Madonna have covered some of her hits.
His influence has extended far beyond the American borders. This morning, a French rap group, "113," paid tribute to him.
This year, Donna Summer sang alongside the favorite contestant on "American Idol." Despite her illness, Summer has been trying to finish one last album in recent months. Her most recent album, "Crayons," was released in 2008.
Note :
Donna Summer is said to have sold 130 million albums. The singer collaborated with Giorgio Moroder, a renowned disco producer. Ms. Summer was married to Bruce Sudano, lead singer of the band Brooklyn Dreams, for over 30 years and the couple had two daughters. She also had a daughter from her first marriage, in 1973, to Austrian actor Helmuth Sommer.
