Nicolas Sarkozy loses the support of the National Front
Having finished third in the first round of the French presidential elections, National Front candidate Marine Le Pen announced to her supporters on Tuesday that she would cast a blank ballot. She has chosen to remain neutral, choosing to support neither of the two candidates in the running.
She explained her decision in these terms: «…This is your primary freedom as a citizen, which I also exercise. I will therefore grant neither confidence nor a mandate to these two candidates. I care too much for you to embark on a path that I know perfectly well represents a false hope, a further disappointment,» the far-right party candidate stated.
Summary of the latest polls
For his part, the presidential candidate, Nicolas Sarkozy, will not be able to count on the official support of the National Front (which achieved a historic success in this election) and its supporters, and is experiencing a slight drop in popularity in the polls.
Despite everything, he remains convinced that his party imposed its themes in this election: "We have become the center of gravity of French politics and today's debates are structured around our proposals," he expressed.
With just days to go before the second round, François Hollande remains the winner in the polls, with nearly 551% of the vote. Undecided voters may make up their minds after the traditional televised debate between the two candidates on Wednesday evening.
